ONDO GOVERNMENT SEEKS STRONGER COLLABORATION ON CHILD WELFARE AHEAD OF 2026 CHILDREN’S DAY

The Ondo State Government has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to tackle child abuse, trafficking, bullying, neglect, and other social challenges affecting children across the state ahead of the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration.

The call was made by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Seun Osamaye, during a press briefing and one-day stakeholders’ engagement held at the Ministry’s Women Development and Skills Acquisition Centre.

The event formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration under the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

Dr. Osamaye appreciated Governor Aiyedatiwa, the First Lady of Ondo State, Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, development partners, security agencies, civil society organisations, religious leaders, and other stakeholders for their continued commitment to child welfare and protection.

She stressed that Children’s Day should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial celebration but as a reminder of society’s collective responsibility to protect, educate, nurture, and empower children.

According to her, issues such as child abuse, trafficking, child labour, abandonment, and poor access to quality education continue to threaten the future of many children, making urgent intervention necessary.

“The theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,’ is a strong call to action for all stakeholders to work together in ensuring that no child is left behind,” she stated.

Osamaye reiterated that the Aiyedatiwa-led administration remains committed to policies and programmes that prioritise child protection, healthcare, education, social inclusion, and the wellbeing of women, children, and vulnerable persons across the state.

She explained that the stakeholders’ engagement was organised to strengthen collaboration, encourage dialogue, and develop strategies aimed at advancing child rights advocacy and ensuring a successful Children’s Day celebration.

Activities scheduled for the celebration include a sitting of the State Children’s Parliament with the Governor, oratory competitions, talent hunts, cultural displays, awareness campaigns, march past, and interactive sessions for children.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Education, Igbekele Ajibefun, represented by his Special Assistant, Dr. Yomi Akinrinmade, described the theme as timely and emphasised the need for policies that support child healthcare, quality education, safety, and skills development.

The Ondo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oluyemi Ibiloye, represented by Deputy Commandant Mrs. Folasade Olakanse, also called for stronger protection for children against insecurity and school-related threats.

In his remarks, Director General of the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission, Abiodun Oyeneyin, disclosed that over 52,000 women and children had benefited from the state’s free healthcare scheme since 2019.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Bridget Awosika urged parents, caregivers, teachers, and community leaders to prioritise children’s rights, education, and welfare.

She also advocated stronger support for children with disabilities and equal access to healthcare and education for every Nigerian child.
