ENVIRONMENT: LAWMA STRENGTHENS NIGHT SURVEILLANCE TO STOP ILLEGAL WASTE DUMPING

…"No hiding place for offenders," says Gbadegesin

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its night surveillance operations to curb indiscriminate waste dumping across the state, ensuring that offenders face prosecution under environmental laws.

LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that round-the-clock monitoring is in effect, leading to multiple arrests of individuals violating waste disposal regulations.

RECENT ARRESTS OF VIOLATORS

Highlighting recent cases, Gbadegesin provided details of individuals caught dumping waste illegally:

  • On 7 February 2025, at 9:20 p.m., an individual, Engineer Akinsola, was caught disposing of waste at the road median along Egbeda-Akowonjo Road, near Micom Bus Stop.

    • Initially, he falsely claimed to be a police officer.
    • Investigations revealed that his residence lacked a designated waste storage facility and had no record of registration with a Private Sector Participant (PSP) for waste disposal.
    • He admitted his landlord instructed him to dispose of waste at the road median.
    • He is now facing prosecution.
  • At Abati Primary School, Shasha Road, LAWMA’s Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team arrested over 25 individuals caught illegally dumping refuse.

    • Six vehicle owners were identified as transporting and dumping large volumes of waste.
    • All arrested offenders will be prosecuted.
  • On 5 February 2025, at 10:37 p.m., a woman identified as Fatima was caught dumping waste at the Micom Bus Stop road median on Akowonjo Road.

    • Her residence also lacked a designated waste facility, and she was not registered with a PSP for waste collection.
    • She, too, will be prosecuted.

LAWMA’S ENFORCEMENT AND PUBLIC AWARENESS EFFORTS

LAWMA is not just focusing on enforcement but is also expanding public education through door-to-door awareness campaigns to teach residents proper waste disposal practices.

Dr. Gbadegesin encouraged Lagos residents to report issues related to waste collection services instead of resorting to illegal dumping, warning that offenders will no longer go unpunished.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations, urging citizens to support efforts in making Lagos cleaner and more sustainable"LAWMA remains committed to transforming Lagos into a cleaner and healthier city. We urge all residents to comply with waste regulations and report any challenges through our dedicated customer service channels."
