GLOBACOM LEADS NIGERIA'S INTERNET SUBSCRIBER GROWTH, ADDS 1.2 MILLION USERS IN MAY

Globacom emerged as Nigeria's fastest-growing internet service provider in May after adding about 1.2 million new internet subscribers, the highest increase recorded among the country's major telecommunications operators during the period.

The latest industry statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that Nigeria's total internet subscriber base grew by 2.67 million, rising from approximately 154.3 million in April to about 157 million in May.

Of the total increase, Globacom accounted for nearly half, expanding its internet subscriber base from about 15.5 million in April to 16.8 million in May.

The NCC data also showed that Airtel Nigeria recorded the second-highest growth, adding about 1.07 million subscribers to increase its internet customer base from 54.8 million to 55.8 million during the month.

MTN Nigeria added 382,894 subscribers, growing its internet subscriber base from about 83.1 million in April to approximately 83.5 million in May.

Meanwhile, T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no subscriber growth for the second consecutive month, maintaining an internet subscriber base of 802,534, despite its national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria.

Industry analysts attributed Globacom's strong performance to the company's ongoing nationwide network modernisation and infrastructure expansion programme, which commenced last year.

The investment programme includes the deployment of thousands of new base stations aimed at extending network coverage to underserved communities while increasing capacity in densely populated urban centres.

The telecom operator has also intensified the expansion of its fibre optic network and relocated network infrastructure affected by major road construction projects across different parts of the country.

In addition, the company has rolled out thousands of 4G LTE sites across strategic cities and communities this year to improve network quality, strengthen connectivity and enhance customer experience in both urban and rural areas.

Telecommunications analysts say the latest figures reflect Nigeria's growing appetite for internet services as demand for digital connectivity continues to rise across households, businesses and institutions.

They also noted that the performance highlights increasing competition among mobile network operators as investments in network infrastructure become a key factor in attracting and retaining subscribers.

For Globacom, the latest subscriber growth underscores the impact of sustained investments in network expansion and technology upgrades aimed at delivering faster internet speeds, improved voice quality and broader nationwide coverage.

As operators continue to expand their infrastructure, industry observers believe competition will remain intense, with service quality, coverage and network reliability expected to play an even bigger role in determining market leadership.
