The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Lagos State Chapter, has named Abigail Ndisika Ogwezzy as its Iconic Woman of the Month for April 2026, in recognition of her contributions to media education, scholarship, and national development.
The honour was conferred under the Association’s NAWOJ Lagos Woman of the Month initiative, a platform created to celebrate exceptional women whose work continues to drive excellence, leadership, and societal impact across different sectors in Lagos State and beyond.
Prof. Ogwezzy, a senior lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at University of Lagos, was recognised for her distinguished academic career and her influence on generations of students, media practitioners, and communication scholars in Nigeria.
According to the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Johnson, the recognition reflects Prof. Ogwezzy’s longstanding commitment to academic excellence, mentorship, advocacy, and public engagement within the communication and media space.
“Her commitment to academic excellence, public engagement, and advocacy has not only strengthened the field of communication but also contributed meaningfully to national discourse and societal advancement,” Johnson stated.
“She has continued to mentor young professionals and empower women within the media industry, making her highly deserving of this recognition,” she added.
NAWOJ Lagos noted that Prof. Ogwezzy’s career has been defined by intellectual leadership, research contributions, and sustained efforts toward strengthening communication studies and media professionalism in Nigeria.
The association also commended her role as a mentor and thought leader whose impact extends beyond the classroom into broader conversations around media ethics, education, gender inclusion, and national development.
Industry stakeholders have described the recognition as a fitting honour for a scholar whose work has helped shape media education and professional standards in Nigeria over the years.
The NAWOJ Lagos Woman of the Month initiative continues to spotlight women making meaningful contributions in their professions and communities while promoting values of integrity, leadership, service, and excellence.
The Association congratulated Prof. Ogwezzy on the recognition and reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating women whose achievements continue to inspire future generations.
