In a bold step to advance environmental sustainability in Nigeria, Sterling Bank, in partnership with Sterling One Foundation, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Sunbeth, community volunteers, and other stakeholders, has announced the launch of The Great Nigeria Cleanup, a nationwide environmental initiative scheduled for April 25, 2026.
The large-scale movement, which will span all six geopolitical zones, aligns with the United Nations Decade of Action and is designed to mobilise citizens across key states including Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Sokoto, Kano, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, and Katsina.
The initiative aims to drive sustained, community-led action against plastic waste and environmental pollution, while promoting a culture of environmental responsibility and national pride.
Speaking on the initiative, the Chief Operating Officer of Sterling Bank, Temitayo Adegoke, emphasised the importance of collective action in driving meaningful impact.
“At Sterling, we believe real impact happens when institutions and individuals unite around a shared purpose. The Great Nigeria Cleanup is an opportunity not just to clean our environment, but to redefine how we care for it. This is about building a culture of responsibility that will outlast this moment,” Adegoke said.
Also commenting, the Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, described the initiative as a critical step toward shaping a sustainable future for Nigeria.
“The future we desire depends on the actions we take today. This initiative goes beyond sanitation—it is about dignity, wellbeing, and shared responsibility. We are proud to support a movement that empowers citizens to take ownership of their environment,” she noted.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with mounting environmental challenges, including inefficient waste management systems and increasing urban pollution, The Great Nigeria Cleanup represents a timely intervention that brings together government agencies, private sector players, and citizens to drive lasting change.
Organisers are encouraging Nigerians nationwide to actively participate in the initiative by stepping out in their communities on April 25 to support the cleanup effort.
The organisers emphasised that a cleaner Nigeria is not just an aspiration, but a shared responsibility that requires sustained commitment from all stakeholders.
