FROM STREETS TO HEALING: INSIDE THE MISSION RESCUING NIGERIA’S FORGOTTEN MENTALLY ILL

Across cities and rural communities in Nigeria, it is not uncommon to see individuals battling severe mental health conditions wandering the streets without care, shelter, or access to medical support. Many of them live in isolation, ignored by society and left to struggle daily with untreated mental illness.

Yet in the quiet town of Aguleri, a growing humanitarian mission is working to change that narrative—one rescue at a time.

Through the efforts of the Seraphic Homes Foundation, founded by Evangelist Ebuka Obi, Spiritual Director of the Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, mentally challenged individuals who once roamed the streets are now finding shelter, treatment, and a chance to rebuild their lives.

At the centre of this effort is the Seraphic Psychiatric Hospital, a facility established to provide free psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable individuals rescued from the streets.

A Mission Born from Compassion

Nigeria continues to face significant challenges in mental health care, with limited psychiatric facilities and widespread stigma preventing many people from receiving treatment.

For individuals who end up living on the streets due to untreated mental illness, access to help can be almost impossible.

Recognising this urgent need, the Seraphic Homes Foundation created a system that goes beyond treatment alone. The mission focuses on rescuing mentally challenged individuals, providing medical care, and helping them reintegrate into society with dignity.

Outreach teams from the foundation actively identify and rescue individuals living on the streets and transport them to the hospital for immediate care.

Rescuing the Forgotten

The rescue operations have already reached several states across southeastern Nigeria, including Anambra State, Imo State, Enugu State, Abia State, and Ebonyi State.

Once rescued, the individuals are admitted into Seraphic Psychiatric Hospital where they receive comprehensive psychiatric care, regular feeding, accommodation, and structured rehabilitation programmes, all provided free of charge.

So far, more than twenty individuals have been successfully taken off the streets and placed under professional medical care.

For many of them, the hospital represents their first real opportunity for treatment and recovery after years of neglect.

More Than Medical Care

The foundation’s work extends beyond medication and diagnosis. Patients are also provided with social rehabilitation and support systems designed to help them regain stability and reconnect with society.

This holistic approach acknowledges that mental health recovery requires not only medical attention but also compassion, dignity, and a supportive environment.

According to the foundation, restoring hope to these individuals is just as important as treating their conditions.

Expanding the Vision

While the initiative began in the Southeast, its founders envision a far broader impact.

Plans are underway to expand the rescue and rehabilitation mission across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, bringing psychiatric support and humanitarian intervention to more communities where mentally challenged individuals remain abandoned on the streets.

The goal is to create a network of support that ensures vulnerable people with mental health conditions are not forgotten or ignored.

Changing the Narrative Around Mental Health

Mental health remains one of the most misunderstood and under-addressed healthcare challenges in Nigeria. Social stigma and lack of awareness often lead to neglect, discrimination, and abandonment of those suffering from mental illnesses.

Initiatives like the Seraphic Psychiatric Hospital are helping to challenge these perceptions by demonstrating that mental health care, compassion, and rehabilitation can restore lives that once seemed lost.

For the individuals rescued from the streets, the journey from abandonment to healing is more than a medical process—it is a restoration of dignity and humanity. And in Aguleri, that journey continues every day.
