OBASA’S SON TIPPED AS NEXT AGEGE COUNCIL CHAIRMAN AMID ENDORSEMENTS AND CONTROVERSY

Barring any last-minute changes, Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, is poised to emerge as the next Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government.

The younger Obasa is reportedly set to clinch the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the July 12, 2025, local council elections, with mounting support from party stakeholders in Agege.

What had initially been dismissed as speculation has now been affirmed following a press conference held on Monday, April 21. Speaking on behalf of the APC stakeholders, Hon. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, the outgoing council chairman, confirmed that Abdulganiyu Obasa is their unanimous choice to succeed him.

According to Egunjobi, the stakeholders believe that the youthfulness and fresh perspective of the Speaker’s son align with the current demand for young, vibrant leadership at the grassroots level. He noted that the endorsement was also a gesture to reward Rt. Hon. Obasa’s years of commitment to the development of Agege.

In a surprising twist, Hon. Oluwagbenga Abiola, the current Vice Chairman and one of the top contenders for the chairmanship, has also thrown his support behind Abdulganiyu. At a briefing on Tuesday, Abiola stated that his endorsement followed a collective appeal from community and political leaders in Agege, dismissing rumours that he was coerced into stepping down. “I remain grateful to Speaker Obasa, who has played a pivotal role in my political journey,” he added.

However, not everyone is on board with the emerging consensus. A civil society group, Concerned Group Initiative (CGI), has voiced strong concerns over what it describes as "political intimidation and imposition of candidates" within the APC in Agege.

Mr. Dele Olajuwon, who leads the group, told journalists that the recent developments reflect a worrying trend of power centralization and lack of internal party democracy. “We are alarmed at how decisions are being made behind closed doors, sidelining other credible aspirants,” he said.

As preparations for the local government elections intensify, the unfolding drama in Agege is likely to shape broader conversations about youth involvement, political succession, and party politics in Lagos.
