LASAA ADDRESSES COMMUNITY CONCERNS OVER BILLBOARD SAFETY IN ABATI BARRACK

The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) is responding to concerns raised by residents, military officers, and their families in Abati Barrack, Surulere, regarding a giant billboard that has fallen twice, causing injuries and damage to lives and property.

LASAA categorically disassociates itself from any actions that endanger lives and property and remains committed to ensuring that only structurally sound advertising structures are deployed across Lagos State. Billboards that pose safety risks or violate regulations will not be allowed to stand.

BILLBOARD IN ABATI BARRACK DECLARED ILLEGAL

For public awareness, LASAA confirms that the billboard in Abati Barrack is illegal and unregistered with the Agency. LASAA has consistently sought to regulate advertising structures within military, police, and air force formations across Lagos but has faced challenges in securing full cooperation from these institutions. It is critical that LASAA be allowed to carry out its mandate without hindrance to prevent incidents of falling billboards and other illegal advertising practices.

ENFORCEMENT ACTION AGAINST RADIUS RESOURCES LIMITED

The billboard’s owner, Radius Resources Limited, was sanctioned and suspended by LASAA on October 24, 2024, due to unethical practices. As a result, the company has no right to reinstall the fallen billboard.

To prevent further hazards, LASAA has: Issued a stop-work order to the company to halt any further activity at the site. Written to the Nigerian Army, urging immediate compliance and a reassessment of billboard installations within Abati Barrack.

LASAA’s CALL FOR COMPLIANCE AND PUBLIC SAFETY

LASAA acknowledges the community’s concerns regarding unregulated billboards and is working to ensure that all outdoor advertising structures meet safety standards.

Managing Director of LASAA, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, reaffirmed the Agency’s position: "We strongly urge all stakeholders—including outdoor advertising practitioners and military, air force, and police formations—to collaborate with LASAA and comply with existing billboard installation regulations. Ensuring public safety must be our collective responsibility."

He further emphasized: "The safety of Lagos residents remains our top priority, and we take incidents like this very seriously. LASAA is committed to enforcing regulations that protect the public from potential hazards caused by improperly installed billboards."

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN ENSURING SAFETY

LASAA calls on the public, including community members and security agencies, to report any unsafe billboard installations or violations of signage regulations. By working together, we can enhance safety and preserve the aesthetic integrity of Lagos.
