JUST IN: AFENIFERE CHIEFTAIN, PA AYO ADEBANJO, PASSES AWAY AT 96

Pa Ayodele "Ayo" Adebanjo, a revered elder statesman, legal luminary, and chieftain of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has passed away at the age of 96. His demise marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics, particularly within the Yoruba socio-political landscape.

A Life Dedicated to Justice and True Federalism

Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Pa Adebanjo played a critical role in Nigeria’s independence struggle and the post-independence political evolution. A close associate of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he was a founding member of the Action Group (AG) in 1951, a party that championed the ideals of progressive governance and true federalism.

Throughout his lifetime, Adebanjo was unwavering in his advocacy for restructuring Nigeria into a truly federal state, believing that only a decentralized government structure could ensure equity, justice, and sustainable development. He was a vocal critic of military rule and an ardent supporter of democratic governance, consistently calling for policies that would benefit the masses.

His Role in Afenifere and National Politics

As one of the key figures in Afenifere, Adebanjo remained at the forefront of Yoruba nationalism and regional political advocacy. Over the years, he became the rallying voice of the group, ensuring that the organization stayed committed to its foundational principles of justice, equity, and self-determination.

Under his leadership, Afenifere remained steadfast in its push for restructuring, often opposing policies perceived to marginalize the Yoruba people and other ethnic groups. His insistence on good governance and accountable leadership made him a strong critic of successive administrations, regardless of party affiliation.

Legacy of Integrity and Fearlessness

Pa Ayo Adebanjo was widely respected for his integrity, fearlessness, and steadfast commitment to his principles. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he never wavered in his beliefs, often putting national interest above personal or political gain. He remained a mentor to younger generations of politicians and activists, emphasizing the importance of service, honesty, and accountability in leadership.

His contributions to Nigeria’s political development were recognized both at home and abroad, earning him accolades as a patriot who dedicated his life to nation-building. Even in his later years, he remained active in political discourse, granting interviews, writing articles, and participating in policy discussions.

Family and National Reactions

Adebanjo’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and the general public. In a statement, his family expressed deep sorrow but also gratitude for a life well-lived.

“We will forever cherish his commitment to truth, justice, and equity. His belief in a better Nigeria was total, and he fought for it until his last breath,” the family said.

President Bola Tinubu, in a condolence message, described Adebanjo as “a fearless statesman and a champion of democracy whose contributions to Nigeria’s development will not be forgotten.” Governors from across the Southwest, members of Afenifere, and other political leaders have also paid tribute, acknowledging his immense impact on Nigerian politics.

Pa Ayo Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced after consultations with family members, political associates, and traditional leaders.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of this political icon, his legacy of truth, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice will continue to inspire future generations.
