DSS DETAINS TWO LAGOS LAWMAKERS OVER OBASA’S IMPEACHMENT

The political landscape within the Lagos State House of Assembly has become increasingly volatile following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. Obasa was removed from office by a majority vote due to allegations of financial mismanagement and misconduct. His removal paved the way for Mojisola Meranda to become the first female Speaker of the Assembly.

In the wake of Obasa’s impeachment, reports indicate that two lawmakers, Hon. Lanre Afinni and Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu, have been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos. Sources within the Assembly suggest that the two legislators are being interrogated in connection with Obasa’s removal. In response, Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojeed Fatai, alongside other Assembly members, visited the DSS office in an attempt to secure their release.

Obasa’s impeachment stemmed from multiple allegations, including financial irregularities and abuse of office. Reports claim that he mismanaged Assembly funds and made unauthorized financial decisions. However, Obasa has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the accusations are politically motivated.

As investigations continue, the situation remains fluid, with further developments expected in the coming days.
