AFFORDABLE HOUSING: FG PARTNERS CHINA TO UNLOCK SCALABLE, TECH-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS

The Federal Government of Nigeria is deepening strategic engagement with China to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing through innovative, technology-driven and scalable solutions aimed at addressing the country’s growing housing deficit.

This development follows a high-level technical study tour to Guangzhou led by Joseph Tegbe, alongside a delegation from Family Homes Funds Limited. The delegation included the Managing Director, Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar, and Executive Director of Operations, Emeka Henry Inegbu.

At the core of the engagement was the exploration of modular and prefabricated housing technologies, an approach widely adopted in China’s construction sector. These industrialised building methods are expected to significantly reduce construction costs, shorten project timelines, and improve quality control—key factors in delivering affordable homes at scale.

With Nigeria’s housing deficit estimated in the millions, the Federal Government is increasingly prioritising international collaboration and modern construction systems to drive sustainable solutions. Discussions during the visit also focused on partnerships with leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms to strengthen technical execution capacity for large-scale social housing projects.

In addition, the delegation engaged prospective financing partners to mobilise long-term capital required to fund affordable housing initiatives and expand access for low- and middle-income earners across the country.

The meetings were facilitated by Joerno Conceptions Limited and E-Link Group, with support from Zou Gang of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Enterprises Working Committee, reflecting strong institutional backing for the initiative.

The move signals a broader shift toward results-oriented bilateral cooperation, where technical expertise, financing, and policy alignment converge to deliver measurable impact. By leveraging China’s advanced construction capabilities, Nigeria aims not only to expand access to affordable housing but also to stimulate job creation, strengthen local supply chains, and enhance urban resilience.

The initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises housing as a critical pillar for economic growth, social stability, and national development.
