The President of the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, has applauded the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) for establishing the Women in Security (WINSEC) Summit and Awards 2026, describing it as a timely initiative that recognises the vital contributions of women to Nigeria's security architecture.
Mrs. Disu made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to the POWA National Headquarters in Abuja.
She commended the association for creating a platform that celebrates the achievements of women in security and law enforcement, saying the recognition would inspire greater commitment to service and encourage more women to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Expressing appreciation for her nomination for an award at the maiden WINSEC Summit, Mrs. Disu said the honour would motivate her to deepen her commitment to improving the welfare of police families and advancing initiatives that promote women.
"I sincerely appreciate this recognition. We are just starting, and by the grace of God, I hope to do even more," she said.
Earlier, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim explained that the visit was to formally invite the POWA President to the inaugural Women in Security (WINSEC) Summit and Awards, scheduled for Wednesday, August 5, 2026, while also seeking POWA's partnership and support for the event.
She described the summit as a national platform designed to honour the courage, professionalism and sacrifices of women serving in Nigeria's security and law enforcement institutions, while promoting strategic discussions on emerging security challenges and women's role in peacebuilding.
According to her, the summit will bring together security agencies, policymakers, government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, media professionals and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration on security, leadership and national development.
Comrade Ibrahim noted that beyond recognising distinguished female officers, the initiative seeks to inspire more young women and girls to pursue careers in the security sector by showcasing outstanding role models who have excelled despite numerous challenges.
She emphasised that women possess unique strengths in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and community engagement, making their increased participation in security institutions essential to addressing Nigeria's evolving security concerns.
The NAWOJ National Chairperson appealed to POWA to support the initiative through institutional collaboration, mobilisation and goodwill to ensure the success of the maiden summit.
She added that award recipients were selected through a transparent nationwide nomination process coordinated by NAWOJ State Councils, with nominees chosen for their exceptional service and contributions to security and national development.
Comrade Ibrahim reaffirmed NAWOJ's commitment to using the WINSEC platform to amplify stories of courage, professionalism and service while inspiring the next generation of women leaders in Nigeria's security sector.
The meeting ended with both organisations expressing optimism about building a stronger partnership to advance women's welfare, promote national security and encourage greater female participation in peacebuilding and security governance.
