Tragedy struck in Akure as the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, Mr. Adeniran Ezekiel Imoleayo, was gruesomely murdered at his residence in the Olopa to Di Woli area, along Ondo Road. The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the shocking development, stating that the victim was forcefully poisoned by two unknown assailants.
The incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, when Mr. Adeniran reportedly stepped out of his house to investigate a strange noise on the rooftop. According to police findings, two men emerged from the nearby bush and ambushed him in the compound.
The assailants allegedly overpowered the Registrar and forced an unknown liquid substance down his throat, suspected to be poison. They fled the scene immediately after the attack, leaving him unconscious.
The victim was discovered shortly after by his driver, Mr. Olowoyo Odunayo Adewale, who found him lying helplessly in the compound. He was rushed to the Police Hospital in Akure, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed that the victim's body has been deposited at Divine Haven Mortuary, Akure, for preservation and autopsy. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full-scale investigation.
Detectives who visited the crime scene gathered initial evidence, while further inquiries led a patrol team to a known hideout, where one suspect was apprehended. The unnamed suspect has been handed over to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad for intensive interrogation.
Police authorities have assured the public of their commitment to unmasking the motive behind the brutal killing and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The University community and residents of Akure have expressed shock and grief over the incident, describing the late Registrar as a dedicated professional and a peace-loving individual.
