The Head of Service of Rivers State, Dr. George Nwaeke, has tendered his resignation, marking a significant shift in the state's civil service leadership. His decision comes amid the ongoing political turbulence following the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Confirming his resignation, the state's Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd), acknowledged Dr. Nwaeke’s service to the state and thanked him for his contributions. In response to the leadership vacuum, Vice Admiral Ibas has swiftly appointed Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown as the Acting Head of Service. Dr. Brown, who previously served as the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, is expected to bring stability to the state's civil service.
In another key appointment, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika has been named the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). His appointment, according to government sources, takes immediate effect and aligns with efforts to restore governance and order in the state.
These developments follow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. The move, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly, was attributed to increasing political instability and pipeline vandalism in the oil-rich region. In their place, Vice Admiral Ibas was installed as the sole administrator to oversee governance for an initial six-month period.
While the government assures residents that these changes are necessary for peace and development, political analysts suggest that the unfolding events could reshape the political landscape in Rivers State for years to come.
