Ghana has lost one of its most influential business magnates, Alhaji Asoma Banda, who passed away on March 1, 2025, at the age of 92. The renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist was laid to rest according to Islamic rites, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to business excellence and national development.
Born in June 1933 in Kintampo, Brong Ahafo Region, Alhaji Banda built an empire in the shipping and aviation sectors. In 1975, he co-founded OT Africa Line, a company that became a leader in maritime transportation. He later established the Antrak Group of Companies in London and Ghana, creating employment for thousands. His contributions to domestic air travel were groundbreaking, as he founded Antrak Air, a fully Ghanaian-owned airline that revolutionized the industry.
Beyond business, his philanthropy was far-reaching. He financed the refurbishment of the maternity wing at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and built a mosque in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, among other charitable projects. His generosity and commitment to Ghana’s development earned him widespread recognition and respect.
His passing has been met with tributes from national and international figures, including Sir Sam Jonah, who described him as a visionary entrepreneur, and Nigerian businessman Dele Momodu, who honored him on social media.
Alhaji Asoma Banda's final rites were conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions, ensuring a dignified burial. His legacy as a business pioneer and humanitarian will continue to inspire generations to come.
