DOYIN OKUPE: A LIFE OF SERVICE AND CONTROVERSY ENDS AT 72

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson and veteran politician, passed away in the early hours of March 7, 2025, at the age of 72. His death marks the end of a career that spanned medicine, politics, and public advocacy, leaving behind a legacy of both influence and controversy.

Okupe's journey began in Iperu, Ogun State, where he was born and later pursued medicine at the University of Ibadan. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos, a venture that underscored his commitment to healthcare. However, it was in politics that he made his most lasting impact.

A vocal and sometimes polarizing figure, Okupe served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the early 1990s before becoming a key media aide to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. His tenure was characterized by his combative defense of government policies and his ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political landscape.

In 2023, he briefly served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign under the Labour Party before stepping down due to legal challenges. Throughout his career, he faced corruption allegations and legal battles, which he often attributed to political witch-hunts. Despite these controversies, he remained a steadfast advocate for his beliefs, unafraid to challenge opponents or voice unpopular opinions.

Okupe’s death comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with political uncertainty and leadership transitions. While some remember him as a dedicated public servant and strategist, others see his career as a reflection of the highs and lows of Nigerian politics.

As tributes pour in, one thing remains clear: Doyin Okupe was never one to be ignored, and his impact—whether in politics or public discourse—will not be easily forgotten.
