The Lagos State House of Assembly has reiterated its unwavering support for its new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, following the impeachment of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa on January 13.
In a statement signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, the Assembly emphasized that over two-thirds of its members remain united behind the decision to impeach Obasa and appoint Meranda as the new Speaker. "We stand firmly by the decision taken and will defend our position to the latter," Hon. Ogundipe declared. The Assembly, comprising representatives from across Lagos, affirmed its commitment to delivering good governance and fostering a harmonious relationship with other arms of government. It described Obasa’s current stance as "uncalled for and unparliamentary."
According to the statement, the decision to remove Obasa was made in line with statutory orders that grant members the inalienable right to replace their principal officers, including the Speaker.
Hon. Ogundipe called on Obasa to embrace peace and follow the example set by other members who have chosen harmony over discord. "This intransigent posture will only heat up the polity and is not in the best interest of Lagos. Any attempt to cause unnecessary tension will be resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Meranda," he stated.
The Assembly reiterated its collective resolve to uphold the peace and stability of Lagos State, emphasizing that "peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve."
This firm position comes as part of efforts by the House to ensure a seamless transition and maintain its focus on legislative duties.
