In a strong advocacy message marking the 2026 International Children’s Day and National Children’s Day, Princess Adeola Shittu, Founder and Convener of Event Diary Lifestyle and Young Child in School Initiative, has called for urgent strengthening of inclusion policies for children with disabilities across Nigeria.
This year’s celebration is themed “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” a national framework emphasizing equal opportunity, protection, and access to development for all children regardless of physical or developmental conditions.
Princess Shittu said the 2026 Children’s Day should serve as a turning point in Nigeria’s approach to child welfare, especially in addressing the needs of children with disabilities, including those living with Down syndrome, autism, and other developmental challenges.
According to her, inclusion must move beyond awareness campaigns into full implementation within schools, communities, and government policy structures.
“Every child deserves dignity, education, and the opportunity to thrive. Inclusion is not a favour—it is a right that must be protected and implemented at all levels of society,” she said.
She urged government agencies, school authorities, civil society organisations, and private stakeholders to invest more in inclusive education systems, accessible learning environments, and teacher training programmes that support children with special needs.
The statement placed particular emphasis on children with Down syndrome, calling for increased public awareness, early intervention support, and social acceptance to ensure they are not excluded from educational and social opportunities.
Princess Shittu further noted that Children’s Day should not only be a celebration but also a national reflection on how well Nigeria is protecting its most vulnerable children.
She added that the strength of any nation is measured by how it treats children who require additional care and support.
Across Nigeria, schools and institutions are expected to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day with events aligned with the national theme, focusing on inclusion, child protection, and equal opportunity.
