Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has been conferred with a rare Lifetime Achievement Award by the GSMA in recognition of his transformative role in the global telecommunications industry.
The honour, presented at the 2026 edition of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, acknowledges Mittal’s decades-long contribution to expanding connectivity across continents and shaping the evolution of the modern mobile ecosystem.
The award ceremony took place in the presence of His Majesty Felipe VI, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, President of Catalonia Salvador Illa, and global industry leaders.
A Defining Industry Legacy
Bestowed on only a handful of leaders in GSMA’s history, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognises individuals whose leadership has left a lasting imprint on the global communications landscape.
Mittal is widely credited with building Bharti Airtel into one of the world’s leading mobile operators, with operations spanning India and multiple African markets. The company serves over half a billion customers and ranks among the top three mobile operators globally by subscriber base.
Beyond corporate growth, Mittal played a pioneering role in expanding mobile services across emerging markets, helping accelerate digital and financial inclusion for millions previously unconnected.
He also served as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018, where he advocated for policies aimed at encouraging infrastructure investment, innovation, and industry collaboration to bridge the global digital divide.
Previous Industry Honours
Mittal’s recognition by the GSMA spans nearly two decades. He previously received the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2008 and again in 2016 for his contribution to the global mobile sector. In 2019, he was felicitated at Mobile World Congress in acknowledgement of his tenure as GSMA Chairman.
Mittal’s Response
Speaking after receiving the award, Mittal described the recognition as both personal and collective.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition and sincerely thank the GSMA for this award. I accept it not only as a personal milestone, but as a tribute to India’s telecom journey, the collective spirit of Bharti, and the rise of Indian telecom companies on the global stage,” he said.
He added that telecommunications remains a powerful force for expanding opportunity, delivering essential services, and unlocking human potential.
“As innovation accelerates, we will continue to work with our partners and stakeholders to ensure that growth advances equity and creates lasting opportunity for generations to come,” Mittal stated.
A Rare Industry Honour
The GSMA Lifetime Achievement Award is considered one of the highest recognitions in the telecommunications industry, reserved for leaders whose innovation and strategic vision have reshaped global connectivity.
For many industry observers, Mittal’s recognition reflects not only his corporate success but also his influence in positioning emerging-market telecom operators as key drivers of global digital transformation.
