NAWOJ SOUTH-WEST CALLS FOR STRONGER SECURITY MEASURES, BOOST IN CHILD VACCINATION UPTAKE

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), South-West Zone, has called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to curb rising insecurity in parts of the region, particularly in Kwara State and neighbouring areas.

The association made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its South-West Zonal Summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

The summit, which was the fifth under the current zonal leadership, brought together chairpersons and secretaries of NAWOJ chapters across the South-West states. It was presided over by the Vice Chairperson, Comrade Adeola Adekunle Omosola.

Discussing the summit theme, “Women Driving Peace and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria: Her Voice, Her Power,” NAWOJ commended the Oyo State chapter for successfully hosting the gathering and facilitating critical discussions on the role of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

The association expressed deep concern over worsening security challenges in parts of the region, including reported cases of extremist activities and house-to-house abductions. It called for intensified security awareness campaigns by relevant stakeholders and urged residents to remain vigilant and security conscious.

In the area of public health, NAWOJ urged parents and guardians to ensure their children participate in the ongoing measles-rubella mop-up vaccination exercise in affected states, noting that the initiative would help protect children from life-threatening diseases. The association also encouraged parents to ensure that female children receive the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

On electoral participation, NAWOJ advocated increased public awareness of the ongoing voter registration exercise and encouraged women of voting age to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The association concluded the summit with a call for peace, unity, and inclusive engagement of all sectors and citizens to promote sustainable national development.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the Chairperson of the Drafting Committee, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, and the Secretary, Oluwaranti Ojewumi.
