There was excitement, pageantry and deep cultural significance at the historic King Kosoko Palace, Ereko, Lagos Island, as popular Nollywood actor, filmmaker and royal prince, Jide Kosoko, was officially declared the Oloja of Lagos-elect, in a development that beautifully blends royalty with entertainment in grand style.
The declaration, which attracted hundreds of members of the King Kosoko Royal Family, palace chiefs and well-wishers, was conducted amid traditional rites, prayers and age-long customs that underscored the importance of the occasion.
The revered stool became vacant following the death of Chief Adebola Ige on December 23, 2017, and after careful consultations and internal deliberations within the royal family, Prince Jide Kosoko emerged as the chosen one to occupy the prestigious position.
At the palace ceremony, the Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, Mrs. Mutiat Ali-Balogun, formally announced and presented Prince Kosoko to the gathering. In line with long-standing palace tradition, she raised his hand and placed it in that of actress Sola Kosoko, symbolically affirming his emergence as Oloja-elect.
She was assisted by the Deputy Olori Ebi General, Oyindamola Ayepola, who also serves as the Head of the Meshimo Ruling House, further strengthening the legitimacy of the process.
Prince Jide Kosoko, a household name in Nollywood with decades of outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s film industry, is also a proud descendant of the King Kosoko royal lineage of Lagos. His emergence has therefore been widely applauded as a fitting choice, combining heritage, maturity, public respect and service.
Following his declaration, the Oloja of Lagos-elect now awaits his traditional installation and capping by the Oba of Lagos, in accordance with established palace protocols and Lagos State traditions.
For many observers, this historic moment once again highlights how Lagos continues to preserve its rich cultural heritage while embracing modern influence, with Prince Jide Kosoko standing tall as a symbol of tradition, continuity and contemporary relevance.
