JMG INSTALLS SOLAR AT NIPCO STATIONS, CUTS ENERGY COSTS BY ₦44.4M ANNUALLY

In a strong signal of the growing shift towards clean and cost-efficient energy in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector, JMG Limited has successfully deployed hybrid solar power systems across three NIPCO Plc fuel stations, delivering annual energy cost savings estimated at ₦44.4 million.

The solar installations, completed between May and June 2025, were carried out at NIPCO stations in Gwagwalada (Abuja), Lekki (Lagos), and Mpape (Abuja). The project has significantly reduced dependence on diesel generators and public grid electricity, positioning the stations as models for energy efficiency in fuel retail operations.

According to JMG, the systems combine high-efficiency solar photovoltaic panels, lithium battery storage, and smart hybrid inverters to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour power supply for critical operations including fuel pumps, LPG systems, lighting, and office administration.

Head of JMG’s Hybrid Solar Division, Abbass Hussein, said the project demonstrates that even energy-intensive businesses can transition to clean power without compromising operational reliability.

“We are proud to support NIPCO in leading the energy transition at the retail level. These stations now run on advanced hybrid solar systems that deliver silent, clean, and uninterrupted power. Since commissioning, the sites have operated with zero grid or generator power,” Hussein said.

He added that the initiative has delivered measurable environmental and financial benefits, including total solar generation of 88,535 kilowatt-hours per year, annual savings of ₦44.4 million in energy costs, and a reduction of 43.8 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Breakdown of the installations shows that the Gwagwalada station generates 42,450 kWh annually, saving about ₦15.6 million and cutting emissions by over 15.3 tonnes. The Lekki station records annual savings of ₦12 million, while the Mpape station delivers savings of ₦16.8 million, each powered by tailored hybrid systems designed to meet site-specific energy demands.

Confirming the impact, NIPCO’s Station Manager in Gwagwalada, Mr. Idoko Jacob, said the solar systems have fully met daily energy needs, especially during favourable weather conditions.

“The stations have not relied on electricity or generator power on bright-weather days since commissioning. Even during poor weather, generator use is minimal. We are impressed by the reliability and cost savings,” he said.

Industry analysts note that the project reflects a growing trend among Nigerian corporates seeking to hedge against rising energy costs and unreliable grid supply through renewable energy investments.

With generator usage reduced to near zero and load coverage ranging between 80 and 100 per cent daily, the JMG–NIPCO collaboration underscores how scalable hybrid solar solutions can deliver both sustainability and profitability.
