The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, yesterday renewed calls for deeper youth involvement in national development, stressing that Nigeria’s progress depends on young citizens who choose responsibility over passive observation.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Citizen-Focused Governance Dialogue held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, the chairman—popularly known as AKOD—delivered a compelling keynote address titled “Citizenship, Not Spectatorship.” He argued that sustainable nation-building is driven by citizens who are willing to commit time, energy, and talent to the collective good.
Dauda, who drew heavily from his personal leadership journey, said young people must understand that meaningful development comes from service, not self-interest. “Nationhood thrives when citizens choose consistent service over selfish expectations. Personal benefits will naturally follow from selfless commitment to community development,” he said.
He urged Nigerian youths to remain focused despite the country’s current socio-economic challenges, emphasizing resilience, patriotism, and discipline as essential qualities for national transformation.
The event, convened by The Nigerian Factor in collaboration with ipComm and Lagos Talks 91.3 FM, brought together policy thinkers, civic leaders, and governance advocates to discuss practical models for strengthening citizen participation in governance.
Dauda reminded participants that governance is a shared responsibility between leaders and the electorate. He encouraged young people to play active roles in democratic processes, volunteerism, community service, and public discourse—activities he described as the backbone of an accountable and progressive society.
He also challenged leaders across all tiers of government to create environments that inspire hope, promote meritocracy, and encourage youth inclusion in decision-making.
The Chairman attended the event alongside the Vice Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, the Chief of Staff, Chief (Mrs.) Funmibi Akinduro, Chief Soku, and other dignitaries.
Dauda commended the organisers for sustaining the dialogue platform, noting that such engagements are vital for shaping an informed and responsible citizenry.
