ACCESS BANK LAUNCHES CLEAN WATER PROJECT IN 10 NIGERIAN COMMUNITIES

...Empowers Over 500,000 Residents with Sustainable Water Access

In a bold move toward advancing sustainable development and enhancing community well-being, Access Bank Plc has unveiled the Access Clean Water Project, a transformative initiative designed to improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) across ten underserved communities in Nigeria.

In partnership with HACEY, a leading development organisation, Access Bank has facilitated the installation of functional boreholes in the following communities: Arogun, Omu Ishoko, Kemta, Ajibode, Aleku, Ogunrun, Oniwawa, Okeran, Abaren, and Afojupa. These installations ensure consistent access to safe drinking water for over 500,000 residents in Obafemi Owode and Otta Local Government Areas of Ogun State.

This initiative directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which advocates for clean water and sanitation for all. It also aligns with Access Bank’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy, reinforcing the bank’s reputation as a sustainability-driven financial institution committed to long-term positive impact.

“Access Bank is proud to support this vital initiative that not only improves lives but also strengthens the foundation for sustainable economic growth,” said Esther Graham, Programme Officer, Health, Access Holdings Plc. “Our commitment to community development is unwavering, and we believe access to clean water is a fundamental right that drives progress.”

With Nigeria’s population exceeding 200 million, access to clean water remains a significant challenge. According to data, pipe-borne water access in urban households has plummeted from 32% in 1990 to just 3% in 2015. The Access Clean Water Project addresses this critical gap by delivering not just infrastructure, but lifesaving education on water safety and hygiene practices.

In addition to providing clean water, the initiative incorporates comprehensive WASH education aimed at empowering community members with knowledge about proper hygiene and the prevention of waterborne diseases. This holistic approach ensures long-term health outcomes and behavioral change.

The project is expected to:

  • Significantly reduce cases of waterborne illnesses
  • Improve school attendance, especially for girls
  • Promote healthier living standards
  • Enhance community resilience and productivity
  • Contribute to inclusive, grassroots development

By investing in clean water infrastructure and education, Access Bank continues to demonstrate its unwavering dedication to creating thriving communities through impactful, people-centered initiatives.
