WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTER ADVOCATES STRONGER FEMALE REPRESENTATION IN POLITICS, BUSINESS

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has called for increased commitment and action from Nigerian women to advance inclusive governance, economic participation, and national development.

She made the call during a one-day town hall meeting and citizen engagement held on Thursday in Abuja.

“The reason why we are here is because we want what is best for ourselves, for Nigerian women, for our communities, and for our families,” the minister stated.

Hajiya Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the importance of the proposed special reserve seats bill at the National Assembly, designed to ensure equitable representation of women in governance. She urged women to be strategic, united, and forward-thinking in their pursuit of political and economic empowerment.

“We are the voting strength of this country—us and our children. That gives us the leverage to negotiate for anything because we will stick to our word. We must become masters in negotiation.

We must strengthen our mechanisms. We must mentor one another. The days are gone when five women come out for one seat and split the votes,” she said.

Hauwa Ibrahim, wife of the Ona of Abaji and President of the FCT Traditional Rulers’ Wives Association, praised the inclusive and collaborative spirit of the engagement. She stressed the need for unity among women to drive sustainable change.

Ms Ibrahim added that the minister’s efforts align with the priorities of traditional institutions and women leaders nationwide, reaffirming that collaboration and shared responsibility are essential for meaningful progress.

Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, expressed optimism about the strides made under the current administration and the opportunities ahead for women in Abuja. She commended the minister’s visionary leadership, which continues to inspire women to pursue collective goals.

Ruth Agbo, President of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture, lauded the resilience and determination of Nigerian women, stating that they are well-positioned to drive growth in agriculture and trade. She, however, highlighted the need for equipment and institutional support to enable women to fully rrealisethis potential.

In her remarks, Maryam Keshinro, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, said the engagement demonstrated a strong commitment among Nigerian women to take charge of their destinies. She expressed confidence that the ideas and resolutions shared at the meeting would translate into concrete actions, propelling women to greater levels of influence and impact.
