…Sets the Stage for a Future of Limitless Possibilities
Wema Bank, Nigeria’s most innovative financial institution and pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, is celebrating a monumental milestone — 80 years of banking excellence.
Founded on May 2, 1945, as Agbonmagbe Bank Limited, Wema Bank has grown from a modest single-branch entity into Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank. With over 150 branches, a robust digital footprint, and millions of customers across the globe, the Bank remains a beacon of resilience, reinvention, and relevance in the nation’s financial services sector.
Through eight decades, Wema Bank has been a catalyst for economic empowerment — closing the financial inclusion gap, supporting MSMEs, and delivering customer-centric innovations that serve Nigerians across all walks of life. From its trailblazing digital platform, ALAT, to bespoke SME and retail offerings, Wema Bank has consistently evolved to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.
Speaking on the historic milestone, Managing Director/CEO Moruf Oseni described the journey as “deeply rooted in the story of Nigeria,” emphasizing the bank’s legacy in championing indigenous enterprise even during colonial rule.
“Wema at 80 is not just a celebration of longevity — it’s a celebration of legacy, resilience, and impact,” Oseni said.
“From 1945 until now, this institution has stood as proof that Nigerian-owned enterprises can thrive, evolve, and remain relevant. I am proud of this journey and grateful to every hand that has helped build this bank.”
He extended heartfelt appreciation to customers, employees (past and present), investors, and partners, promising continued excellence in service and value delivery.
“Wema Bank is built to last, built for you, and built for the future. We are with you — all the way,” Oseni concluded.
To cap off the celebrations, Wema Bank hosted a glamorous “Wema at 80 Gala Night” on Friday at 6 p.m. in Lagos. The star-studded event, themed “Timeless Elegance,” featured electrifying performances by Afrobeats superstar Davido, Fuji icon Ayuba, pop sensation Wande Coal, acclaimed vocalist Yinka Davies, and music star 9ice. The evening also brought together a distinguished gathering of celebrities, dignitaries, and stakeholders.
The celebration was broadcast live at 7 p.m. on Wema Bank’s YouTube channel and select national television stations, giving viewers across the country the opportunity to witness this landmark moment in Nigerian banking history.
