In a bold stride towards repositioning Ogun State as a premier cultural and tourism destination, the state government has announced a strategic partnership with the renowned Nike Art Gallery to establish a world-class art exhibition space at the iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Centre.
The initiative, aimed at restoring the historical site to its former glory, seeks to exponentially increase annual tourist visits from the current 20,000 to over 100,000. The plan was unveiled following a recent visit to the site, where officials resolved to transform the experience for both local and international visitors.
A major highlight of this revitalization effort is the shutdown of the old event hall at Olumo Rock, which is now being repurposed into an expansive art gallery under the Nike Art Foundation. The project is scheduled for completion ahead of the upcoming National Sports Festival, expected to draw over 15,000 visitors to the state.
Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration is also spotlighting other cultural and historical landmarks in the state, including the Adire Market, the ancestral homes of Chief MKO Abiola and the Ransome-Kuti family, Centenary Hall, and the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library. Together, these sites tell the story of Ogun’s deep cultural roots and national significance.
In a complementary move to nurture creative industries, the state is partnering with celebrated filmmaker and cultural entrepreneur Bolanle Austen-Peters to launch a creative arts and entertainment village. Slated to open in the next two months, the facility is expected to serve as a hub for talent, storytelling, and performance art.
The state’s thriving Adire industry also continues to receive strong government backing, with investments in infrastructure, modern equipment, and digital tools like the Adire Ogun Digital Marketplace. The adoption of Adire as the official attire for state events reinforces this commitment, while festivals such as Ojude Oba and Lisabi Day remain vibrant showcases of indigenous culture and fashion.
The government expressed appreciation to Chief (Mrs) Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of Nike Art Gallery, for her dedication to the partnership and her commitment to amplifying the global appeal of Olumo Rock.
“This is more than a tourism project; it’s a cultural renaissance,” the statement noted. “Together, we are building a legacy that proudly reflects the history, creativity, and boundless potential of Ogun State.”
