The political and academic communities were thrown into mourning on Sunday following the death of a former governor of Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo. The elder statesman passed away in the early hours of April 6, just nine days to his 90th birthday.
Dr. Olunloyo, who was born on April 14, 1935, was renowned as one of Nigeria's brightest minds — a mathematician, engineer, and politician who made significant contributions to both public service and the field of academia.
He served briefly as governor of Oyo State during the Second Republic, from October to December 1983, before the military coup that brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power ended his tenure prematurely. Despite the short duration, his impact in office and his towering intellectual legacy remained relevant across decades.
A former commissioner in the old Western Region at the young age of 27, Dr. Olunloyo was also the first Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan and later Kwara State Polytechnic. His academic brilliance took him across continents, earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Known for his deep love for Ibadan, Oyo State, and Nigeria at large, the late Olunloyo was a respected voice in politics and scholarship — often referred to as one of Nigeria’s living encyclopedias.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, academics, traditional rulers, and citizens who remember him for his unwavering service, depth of knowledge, and principled leadership.
Plans are underway for a befitting burial to celebrate a life of brilliance, sacrifice, and legacy.
Dr. Olunloyo is survived by children and grandchildren, including popular journalist and media personality, Kemi Olunloyo.
