The Nigerian gospel music community is mourning the loss of one of its most vibrant and beloved figures, Bolaji Olarewaju, popularly known as Big Bolaji or “Big B,” who passed away at the age of 50. His death was confirmed by family sources on Saturday, April 19, 2025, following what was described as a brief illness.
According to reports, Big Bolaji collapsed during a musical event on the evening of Friday, April 18, and sadly did not recover. The tragic news was shared by close associates and later confirmed by the family in a heartfelt social media announcement posted by fellow gospel artiste, Beejaysaxb.
Big Bolaji was not only a household name in gospel music but also an ordained pastor under the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). He began his journey into gospel music with the group J’apha and went on to carve out a unique niche with his electrifying stage presence and soul-stirring worship sessions. His songs, filled with messages of hope and faith, inspired countless listeners across Nigeria and beyond.
Beyond music, he was a qualified surveyor and a respected radio talk show host, known for using every platform to uplift and encourage the youth. Just last year, he celebrated his milestone 50th birthday in November 2024, surrounded by family, friends, and admirers who never imagined it would be his last.
Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the entertainment and religious communities. Fans and colleagues have described him as “a giant in gospel music,” “a beacon of joy,” and “a true servant of God.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
As the gospel world grapples with this painful loss, one thing is clear: Big Bolaji’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through his music, ministry, and generosity of spirit.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
