POLITICS: LAGOS LG BOSS, BOLATITO SHOBOWALE, STEPS DOWN OVER HEALTH ISSUES AS SANWO-OLU APPOINTS ACTING CHAIRMAN

The prolonged absence of Bolatito Shobowale, Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), due to health challenges, has led Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to approve the appointment of Oladipupo Oluwaloni as the Acting Chairman to ensure the smooth running of the council’s affairs.

Shobowale had been away from office for over six months due to an undisclosed medical condition, causing growing concerns among residents and council officials about the leadership vacuum. Sources within the local government revealed that multiple efforts were made to facilitate her return, but her health condition has not improved enough for her to resume official duties.

Shobowale’s absence had begun to affect governance in Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, especially in financial planning. One of the major issues was her failure to present the 2025 budget before the council lawmakers, an essential process required by law. This delay raised fears that the council could face a financial crisis, especially concerning the funding and execution of ongoing projects.

Adding to the uncertainty, instead of formally handing over power to her deputy, as stipulated by government protocol, Shobowale delegated the council’s affairs to the Council Manager. This move reportedly caused administrative bottlenecks, with key decisions stalling due to the absence of a clear leadership structure.

The decision to appoint an acting chairman was not taken lightly, as Governor Sanwo-Olu was reportedly reluctant to make a direct replacement, given Shobowale’s elected status. However, mounting pressure from political leaders within the All Progressives Congress (APC), who feared that governance in the LCDA was suffering, played a significant role in influencing the decision.

The APC leadership recommended that an acting chairman be appointed to prevent further disruptions to government activities and ensure that infrastructure projects, community programs, and financial allocations continue without hindrance.

In an official directive, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Bolaji Roberts, issued a letter to Oluwaloni, instructing him to assume office immediately and take charge of council operations.

Reacting to his appointment, Oladipupo Oluwaloni expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and the APC leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility. He assured the residents of Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA that his administration would prioritize community welfare, continuity of projects, and transparent governance.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment and ready to serve the people of Ayobo-Ipaja with dedication. My focus will be on ensuring that ongoing projects are completed, essential services continue uninterrupted, and residents feel the positive impact of governance,” Oluwaloni stated.

His appointment marks a critical turning point for the LCDA, ensuring stability and continued progress as Shobowale focuses on her recovery. Meanwhile, political analysts believe this situation highlights the need for clear succession planning within local government structures to prevent administrative setbacks in similar circumstances.
