The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has taken a new twist as Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as Speaker, while Mojisola Meranda has returned to her previous role as Deputy Speaker.
Meranda, who became the first female Speaker of the Assembly following Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, resigned from the position after 49 days in office. Her resignation during a plenary session on March 3, 2025, set the stage for Obasa’s unopposed return as Speaker.
Following Meranda’s resignation, Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa I) nominated Obasa for the speakership, with the motion seconded by Akinsanya Nureni. The lawmakers unanimously voted Obasa back into office, reversing the January decision that had removed him over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.
After stepping down, Meranda was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker, a position she previously held before the leadership shake-up. This move is seen as part of a political realignment to maintain stability within the Assembly.
Obasa’s reinstatement marks a significant power shift in Lagos politics. Having served as Speaker since 2015, his return underscores his strong political influence within the state legislature.
Meanwhile, Meranda’s short-lived tenure as Speaker made history, but her return to the Deputy Speaker role suggests a compromise among political factions within the Assembly.
The development has sparked mixed reactions. While some lawmakers view the decision as a necessary step to restore order, others see it as a strategic political maneuver by key power players in Lagos politics.
With Obasa back in charge, attention will now shift to the legislative agenda of the House and how governance in Lagos will be affected moving forward.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
