JUST IN: LAGOS ASSEMBLY IN TURMOIL AS OBASA STORMS SPEAKER’S OFFICE AMID POWER STRUGGLE

The Lagos State House of Assembly is engulfed in a deepening crisis following dramatic events earlier today. Former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was controversially impeached in January, forcefully entered the Speaker’s office, allegedly breaking in with the backing of security operatives.

Footage circulating online shows Obasa at the Assembly complex surrounded by heavily armed police officers and civil defence personnel, suggesting that his security detail has been reinstated. The unexpected move comes as Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who replaced Obasa, faces increasing uncertainty over her position.

A Leadership Tussle Turns Hostile

The crisis dates back to January 13, when 32 out of the 40 Assembly members voted to impeach Obasa while he was out of the country. The decision sparked controversy, and despite interventions from President Bola Tinubu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and other APC leaders, the dispute remains unresolved.

In a twist that raises further concerns, all security operatives assigned to Speaker Meranda, including her police escorts and DSS operatives, were withdrawn earlier today without explanation. Sources close to her claim that the withdrawal was abrupt, leaving her exposed at a time of heightened tension.

Assembly Sealed, Power Play Unfolds

This is not the first time the crisis has taken a dramatic turn. Just last week, DSS operatives and police officers sealed off the offices of Speaker Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk of the House, fueling speculation of a power play at the highest levels. The move was reportedly aimed at preventing Meranda and her supporters from solidifying their grip on power.

Now, with Obasa physically reclaiming the Speaker’s office, questions arise about the legality of his actions and what this means for governance in Lagos State. His supporters argue that he remains the rightful Speaker, while Meranda’s camp insists on upholding the Assembly’s earlier decision.

What Happens Next?

The unfolding drama has thrown the Lagos Assembly into uncertainty. Will Obasa reclaim his position? Will the police and other security agencies be called to restore order? And more importantly, how will Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the APC leadership react to this latest development?

As the situation develops, political observers warn that the crisis could have far-reaching implications for governance in Lagos. For now, all eyes remain on the Assembly complex, where tensions continue to rise.

Stay tuned for updates.
