JUST IN: CP WITHDRAWS POLICE ESCORTS FROM LAGOS SPEAKER AND ASSEMBLY COMPLEX

In a significant development within the Lagos State House of Assembly, all police escorts assigned to Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Assembly, as well as those securing the Assembly complex, have been withdrawn with immediate effect. This action has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of the Speaker and the legislative premises.

The Speaker's Special Adviser on Information, Victor Ganzallo, confirmed the withdrawal, expressing deep concern over the abrupt move. He emphasized that the Speaker is now vulnerable and exposed to potential threats, describing the situation as unprecedented and calling for urgent resolution.

This development follows a series of events that have escalated tensions within the Assembly. On January 13, 2025, former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed from office by 32 out of 40 Assembly members, leading to the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. The leadership change has been contentious, with ongoing disputes and interventions from various political stakeholders.

The sudden withdrawal of security personnel has left both the Speaker and the Assembly complex unprotected, raising fears of potential security breaches. As of now, neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the state government has provided an official explanation for this action. Stakeholders and observers are calling for immediate measures to address the security vacuum and ensure the safety of legislative officials and infrastructure.

This situation underscores the intricate dynamics and challenges within the Lagos State political landscape, highlighting the need for prompt and effective interventions to maintain stability and order within the state's legislative arm.
