GOV LUCKY ORIMISAN AIYEDATIWA: USHERING IN A NEW ERA FOR ONDO STATE

... A Visionary Leader Takes the Helm

By Adeola Shittu

Ondo State, the heart of Nigeria’s Sunshine region, stands at a historic crossroads as Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa embarks on a fresh administration. Following the untimely passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, the former deputy governor has now taken full charge, bringing with him a blend of resilience, experience, and an unwavering commitment to governance.

His ascension is not just a change of leadership—it is a transformation, a bold step into a new phase for the people of Ondo. With a well-articulated Seven-Point Developmental Agenda, Aiyedatiwa is set to redefine governance, focusing on economic growth, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and industrialization.

FROM BUSINESS TITAN TO POLITICAL TRAILBLAZER

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s journey is an inspiring story of self-made success. Born on January 12, 1965, in the oil-rich Obe-Nla, Ilaje Local Government Area, he grew up understanding the realities of economic hardship and the importance of strategic leadership.

His foray into education saw him earn an NCE in Economics and Government, an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan, and later, an MBA from the University of Liverpool. These academic credentials set the foundation for his impressive career in business and governance.

With a sharp business acumen, he established Blue Wall Group of Companies, a thriving enterprise with interests in trading, forex, and travel logistics. But his passion for public service called, leading him to join active politics in 2011 under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)—a party that later merged into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

POLITICAL RESILIENCE AND THE ROAD TO POWER

Aiyedatiwa’s political rise is a tale of dedication and calculated moves. Appointed Federal Commissioner at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in 2018, he played a key role in regional development before being chosen as Akeredolu’s running mate for the 2020 gubernatorial election.

As Deputy Governor, he stood firmly by his principal, even when political tensions arose. Twice, he assumed the role of Acting Governor during Akeredolu’s medical absences, ensuring continuity in governance. His loyalty, administrative strength, and strategic patience positioned him as the natural successor when the state needed a leader after Akeredolu’s demise.

On December 27, 2023, history was rewritten as Aiyedatiwa was sworn in as Ondo State’s Executive Governor, marking the beginning of a new political era.

TOURISM AS A KEY ECONOMIC DRIVER

Recognizing the vast potential of tourism in boosting Ondo State’s economy, Governor Aiyedatiwa has placed tourism at the center of his administration’s agenda.

As part of his inauguration activities, he led a high-profile visit to Araromi Beach on Saturday. The move signals a deliberate effort to position Ondo as a top tourist destination in Nigeria.

Araromi Beach, with its pristine coastline, rich biodiversity, and untapped economic potential, is a hidden treasure that, if properly harnessed, could generate employment, increase internally generated revenue (IGR), and attract both local and international visitors.

The governor’s strategic tourism drive aligns with his broader vision to diversify the economy, reducing reliance on federal allocations and opening up new investment opportunities. Plans are underway to develop eco-tourism, upgrade hospitality infrastructure, and create sustainable tourism policies that will make Ondo a go-to destination.

THE SEVEN-POINT AGENDA: A ROADMAP FOR TRANSFORMATION

Governor Aiyedatiwa has hit the ground running with a Seven-Point Developmental Agenda, addressing key challenges in Ondo State:

  1. Education Reform – Enhancing the quality of learning, teacher training, and school infrastructure.
  2. Healthcare Advancement – Upgrading hospitals, expanding rural health services, and ensuring affordable healthcare for all.
  3. Agricultural Growth – Boosting food production, supporting farmers, and strengthening agribusiness.
  4. Infrastructure Expansion – Roads, electricity, and water projects to drive economic activities.
  5. Commerce and Industry – Creating a business-friendly environment to attract investors.
  6. Security Enhancement – Strengthening Amotekun and other security measures to safeguard lives and property.
  7. Social Welfare & Women Empowerment – Policies to uplift vulnerable groups, promote gender equality, and provide youth employment opportunities.

A GOVERNOR ROOTED IN FAITH AND PURPOSE

For Governor Aiyedatiwa, his leadership is not just about policies—it is about divine guidance. During his Inauguration Thanksgiving Service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House, Akure, he reflected:  "If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, what would our Israel be saying this day?"

This deep-rooted faith is a core part of his governance style, influencing his decisions and leadership approach.

CHALLENGES AND EXPECTATIONS: CAN HE DELIVER?

Taking over from a politically strong predecessor like Akeredolu comes with immense challenges. There are questions about:

  • His ability to unite all political factions within APC.
  • Managing economic pressures and ensuring steady state revenue.
  • Delivering on promises amidst limited resources.
  • Tackling youth unemployment and social unrest.

However, Governor Aiyedatiwa has already shown political dexterity and administrative competence. His business background gives him an edge in financial management, and his experience in governance provides a strategic advantage.

THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA IN ONDO STATE

As Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa steps into his full term, Ondo State watches with hope and anticipation. The people expect progress, inclusivity, and impactful governance. His success will not only shape the state’s future but also influence his political trajectory beyond Ondo.

With vision, experience, and a strategic roadmap, Aiyedatiwa’s leadership could very well redefine the landscape of governance in Southwest Nigeria. The next four years will be a defining moment—not just for him, but for Ondo State and its people.
