ENTERTAINMENT: 'I BORROWED CLOTHES, JEWELRY TO SHOOT OMIJE OJU MI VIDEO’ – BUNMI AKINNAANU
... As Gospel singer recounts her journey from poverty to fame
Renowned Nigerian gospel artist Bunmi Akinnaanu-Adeoye has shared an emotional account of her journey to success, detailing how she had to borrow clothes and jewelry to shoot the music video for her hit song, Omije Oju Mi.In a heartfelt video making rounds on social media, the gospel icon reflected on her struggles, explaining how resilience and faith shaped her path despite overwhelming challenges. Speaking in Yoruba, Bunmi expressed that her story is so moving it often brings people to tears.
She recalled, “If you hear my story, you will weep along with me. I don’t like granting interviews because, at some point, everyone involved—the interviewer, interviewee, and cameraman—will break down and cry. My story is very bad.”
The singer recounted her early years of poverty, revealing she wore rags and bathroom slippers to church but refused to let her circumstances define her future. In an especially poignant revelation, she admitted that every outfit and piece of jewelry she wore for the music video of Ibere Nla, a song from her Omije Ojumi album, was borrowed.
“All the clothes I wore in the song Ibere Nla were borrowed,” Bunmi said. “If you watch the video, the blue-black iro and buba I wore was trendy at the time, but it wasn’t mine. In fact, if you look closely, another person wore it among the dancers in the video.”
She also recounted the cautionary conditions that came with borrowing the jewelry. “The person I borrowed them from was in the video, standing behind me. She warned me, ‘If you lose it, you are dead.’ At one point, the earring fell, and she signaled me to pick it up quickly because it must not get lost.”
Despite these challenges, Bunmi’s story is a testament to her determination and unyielding faith, inspiring many who resonate with her humble beginnings and ultimate rise to stardom.
