IBADAN FUNFAIR TRAGEDY: AGIDIGBO FM CLEARS AIR ON MISINFORMATION, OFFERS CONDOLENCES

In a tragic turn of events, a children’s funfair organized by the WINGS Foundation at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, took a devastating course on December 18, 2024, leaving the community in deep sorrow. What was meant to be a day of joy and celebration turned into a scene of chaos as reports emerged of a mammoth crowd assembling at the venue in the early hours of the morning.

The incident, which resulted in injuries and loss of lives, shocked the public, prompting widespread concern and speculation. Among the swirling rumors was the claim that Agidigbo FM, a prominent radio station in Ibadan, organized the ill-fated event. However, in an official statement, the management of Agidigbo FM clarified their position, firmly stating that they were not the event organizers but merely one of the media platforms used to promote the program.

According to the statement signed by Olayinka AbdulWahab, Director of Programmes, Agidigbo FM received notice of the overcrowding early in the morning. Acting swiftly, the station employed its media channels to broadcast public service announcements and jingles, urging people to stop proceeding to the venue. Despite their efforts, the tragedy could not be entirely prevented.

In the aftermath of the incident, organizers, alongside security personnel, medical officials, and relevant agencies, worked tirelessly to manage the situation and provide support to those affected. The management of Agidigbo FM expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and injuries sustained, calling on the public to avoid spreading misinformation and fake news. Instead, they urged the community to focus on supporting victims’ families and praying for the recovery of those hospitalized.

“This is not the time to spread misinformation,” the statement read. “We implore the general public to continue to pray for the speedy recovery of those in various hospitals and sympathize with the families of those who lost their lives.”

The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of crowd control and safety measures at public events. As investigations continue, the Ibadan community remains united in grief and determination to learn from this harrowing experience. Meanwhile, Agidigbo FM reaffirmed its commitment to accurate information dissemination and public service, urging people to reach out directly for verified updates.

As the city mourns, the focus now shifts to healing, support, and ensuring that such a tragedy never occurs again.
