OYO CHILDREN’S FUNFAIR TRAGEDY: ORGANISERS DETAINED AS MAKINDE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION

The organisers of a children’s funfair at the Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, where a tragic stampede claimed multiple lives on Wednesday, have been taken into custody.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed the arrests via a statement on his official X handle, expressing grief over the incident and assuring the public that thorough investigations are underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.

“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, the venue of an event organised for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue has led to multiple loss of lives and injuries. This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths,” Makinde said.

He further revealed that security agents and medical personnel were immediately deployed to restore order and attend to victims. The event was halted, and attendees were safely escorted from the venue to prevent further casualties.

The governor assured the public that those responsible would face the full weight of the law. “Anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable,” he added.

The tragic event was part of a 2024 children’s carnival reportedly organised by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan. The carnival, aimed at hosting 5,000 children aged 0-13, promised scholarships and other prizes, with assurances of adequate security for all participants.

Makinde concluded by extending his condolences to the families of the victims and praying for the repose of the departed souls. Security agencies continue to investigate the incident to ensure justice is served.
