NEWS: UNILAG LECTURER FACES RAPE ALLEGATION AS POLICE LAUNCH INVESTIGATION

An Associate Professor of Botany at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Kadiri Akeem Babalola, is facing allegations of rape made by a 20-year-old undergraduate student.

According to the allegation, the incident occurred on August 16, 2023, when the student (whose identity has been withheld) reportedly visited the lecturer's office to seek assistance with her academic results. The student alleged that, instead of offering the requested assistance, the lecturer sexually assaulted her.

Speaking to the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation (InclusiveSWEF), the student alleged that Dr. Babalola forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

The NGO subsequently reported the matter to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, prompting the intervention of the then Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa. According to the NGO, the Commissioner directed that the matter be investigated, and a warrant for the lecturer's arrest was obtained through the appropriate legal process.

The organization further stated that the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG was formally notified of the allegation and given a seven-day ultimatum to produce the accused lecturer.

According to InclusiveSWEF, the lecturer admitted to the allegation when he was invited by the Vice-Chancellor for questioning. The Vice-Chancellor subsequently alerted the police through the university's Chief Security Officer, leading to Dr. Babalola's arrest.

InclusiveSWEF commended the collaborative efforts of the University of Lagos and the Nigeria Police Force, describing their actions as a demonstration of commitment to ensuring that the student receives justice.

The matter remains subject to investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
