HYDROGEN TRAINS TEACHERS, STUDENTS ON RESPONSIBLE AI USE

Teachers and students in Lagos public secondary schools are being introduced to practical ways of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for teaching, learning and creativity through the inaugural AI4Learning Initiative by Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited.

The programme, organised in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and its Education District III office, was held on September 30, 2026, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The initiative brought together separate learning programmes for teachers and students at Victoria Island Senior Secondary School and Kuramo Senior College respectively.

For teachers, the training explored the use of AI in lesson preparation, differentiated learning, creativity and classroom activities, while students examined how the technology could support studying, critical thinking and creative work.

A key focus of the programme was responsible AI use, with participants encouraged to treat AI as an assistant rather than a replacement for human judgement. The sessions also highlighted the importance of verifying information, protecting personal data and taking responsibility for decisions and work supported by AI.

The initiative adopted a train-the-trainer approach, equipping educators with knowledge that can be applied beyond the initial programme and shared with colleagues and students within their school communities.

Fiyinfoluwa Olorunsola, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited, said the programme was based on the belief that technology has greater impact when people understand how to use it effectively.

“AI4Learning reflects our belief that technology creates greater impact when people have the knowledge and confidence to use it well,” Olorunsola said.

She added that AI was becoming an important part of the future and that teachers and young people needed the confidence and judgement to engage with the technology.

Regina Iton, Vice Principal, Victoria Island Senior Secondary School, described the practical exposure to AI as valuable, noting the responsibility of educators to help students understand technologies shaping their world.

Obinna Ojekwe, Head, Marketing and Communications, Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited, said partnerships between the public and private sectors would be important to Nigeria and Africa’s progress.

He said AI4Learning was intended to give public-school teachers and students useful AI skills while building confidence in navigating an increasingly AI-enabled environment.

The initiative reflects growing efforts to move conversations around AI in education beyond access to technology towards practical skills, responsible use and human judgement.
