The sporting community in Ondo State is set to celebrate some of its notable contributors as the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, honours 50 personalities for their outstanding contributions to the development of sports in the state.
Among the distinguished personalities to be recognised is Akogun Olugbenga Omole, founder of the Akogun Olugbenga Football Tournament, who will receive the Ondo SWAN Golden Sports Icon Award alongside 49 other sports personalities.
The special 50 Sports Icon Award is being organised as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Ondo State.
The award ceremony is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at MMA House, opposite Akure Mall Shopping Complex, Akure, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Akogun Olugbenga Omole has continued to contribute to grassroots football development through the Akogun Olugbenga Football Tournament, which provides opportunities for young football talents to showcase their abilities and participate in competitive football.
His recognition by SWAN places him among 50 individuals being celebrated for their contributions to the growth and development of sports in Ondo State over the years.
The ceremony is expected to attract sports stakeholders, athletes, football enthusiasts, sports administrators, journalists and other dignitaries as the state celebrates five decades of its creation.
The Ondo SWAN Golden Sports Icon Award is also expected to serve as a celebration of the individuals who have played various roles in shaping the sporting history of the state.
For Akogun Olugbenga Omole and the other honourees, the recognition marks an opportunity to celebrate their contributions to sports while joining Ondo State in commemorating its golden jubilee.
