REJUVENATION IN IBADAN: HOW THE 2026 NUJ/NAWOJ RETREAT REIMAGINED THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM

Far from the relentless deadlines, breaking news alerts and pressures of the newsroom, journalists from across Nigeria's B-Zone found something equally important in Ibadan—time to reflect, reconnect and reimagine the future of their profession.

The tranquil surroundings of Ilaji Hotels & Sports Resort, Akanran, Ibadan, provided the perfect setting for the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Retreat, where media professionals gathered for three days of strategic conversations, professional development and personal rejuvenation.

Held under the theme, "Stronger Together: Collaboration, Capacity and Sustainability for the Future of Journalism," the retreat brought together journalists, union leaders and media stakeholders committed to strengthening the profession at a time when journalism continues to evolve amid rapid technological change, economic pressures and growing public expectations.

Leading the retreat was the Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde, alongside prominent media leaders including the Vice President of NAWOJ B-Zone, Mrs. Adeola Adekunle; former NAWOJ National President, Yeye Ifeyinwa Omowole; NUJ National Financial Secretary, Mr. Samuel Dada; and Special Advisers to the NUJ President, Dr. Adeola Ekine and Mr. Rotimi Ojomoyela, among other distinguished personalities.

Throughout the retreat, speakers stressed that the future of journalism depends not only on technological adaptation but also on stronger collaboration, continuous capacity building and sustainable union leadership.

The gathering served as a platform for meaningful discussions on the changing media landscape, ethical journalism, professional resilience and the importance of equipping journalists with the skills required to thrive in an increasingly digital and competitive environment.

Beyond the conference sessions, the retreat offered participants an opportunity to step away from the demands of daily reporting and reconnect with colleagues in a relaxed environment.

Dressed in colourful matching Ankara attire, delegates celebrated a shared professional identity that reflected the retreat's central message of unity and collective progress.

The atmosphere shifted from intense discussions to moments of laughter and recreation as participants took part in team-building exercises, networking sessions and light sporting activities across the expansive facilities of Ilaji Hotels & Sports Resort.

The resort's beautifully landscaped environment and world-class recreational facilities created an atmosphere that encouraged informal conversations, stronger professional relationships and renewed motivation.

For many participants, the retreat represented more than an annual gathering. It became an opportunity to recharge mentally, physically and professionally while reaffirming journalism's enduring role in promoting accountability, informing society and defending democratic values.

As the retreat continues, one message has emerged clearly: the future of journalism will not be built by individual newsrooms working in isolation, but by professionals willing to collaborate, embrace innovation, invest in continuous learning and stand together in protecting the integrity of the profession.

The 2026 NUJ/NAWOJ Retreat in Ibadan therefore served as more than a professional conference. It became a timely reminder that as journalism evolves, so too must the journalists who practise it—stronger together, better equipped and ready for the future.
