The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has announced the passing of its former State Secretary, Lady Mrs. Uche Francisca Akwuobi, describing her as a committed journalist, passionate advocate for women, and a dedicated champion of children's rights.
According to a statement issued by the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, Lady Akwuobi passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026, in the United States of America after a brief illness.
The association said her death marks the loss of one of its most respected veteran members whose contributions to the growth of NAWOJ Lagos and the advancement of women in journalism remain unforgettable.
During her time as State Secretary, Lady Akwuobi was widely admired for her dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening the association. She also played an active role in promoting child rights and supporting programmes aimed at improving the welfare of women journalists.
Beyond her official responsibilities, she served as Chairperson of one of NAWOJ Lagos' Children's Party committees, where she helped create memorable experiences for children and families through community-focused initiatives.
Paying tribute to the late journalist, the leadership of NAWOJ Lagos described her as a shining light whose legacy of selfless service would continue to inspire future generations of women journalists.
"Lady Uche Francisca Akwuobi was more than a former State Secretary; she was a shining light, a passionate advocate for women, and a committed member of our association. Her dedication to NAWOJ Lagos will forever remain a benchmark for selfless service. We stand in solidarity with her family during this difficult time," the statement read.
NAWOJ Lagos extended its heartfelt condolences to the Akwuobi family, friends and colleagues, praying that God grants them the strength to bear the loss.
The association noted that burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course and urged members to remember the family in their prayers.
