Nigeria is stepping deeper into the global digital economy conversation as Joseph Tegbe, Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, participated in the inaugural assembly of the World Data Organization in Beijing.
The high-level event brought together more than 500 global stakeholders, including policymakers, multilateral institutions, and technology experts, signaling a growing international push toward coordinated data governance and digital economy frameworks.
Tegbe, accompanied by NCSP Head of International Relations, Judy Melifonwu, represented Nigeria’s strategic interests in shaping global conversations around data access, security, and cross-border data flows. His participation highlights Nigeria’s increasing commitment to digital cooperation, particularly within its bilateral relationship with China.
At the assembly, Ding Xuexiang delivered a keynote address on behalf of Xi Jinping, emphasizing the urgent need for global collaboration in unlocking the value of data while maintaining security, trust, and inclusiveness in the digital economy.
Why This Matters for Nigeria
Nigeria’s presence at the WDO assembly positions the country to benefit from emerging global opportunities in data and technology. Key advantages include:
- Influence in global data governance policies
- Stronger Nigeria–China digital cooperation
- Access to investment in digital infrastructure
- Knowledge exchange and innovation growth
- Opportunities for Nigerian tech talent in global ecosystems
As digital transformation accelerates worldwide, participation in platforms like the World Data Organization allows Nigeria to play a more active role in shaping the rules of the global data economy rather than simply adapting to them.
The launch of the WDO marks a new phase in international collaboration on data governance. With Tegbe’s involvement, the NCSP continues to align Nigeria’s strategic interests with evolving global trends, reinforcing the country’s position in the fast-growing digital economy.
