The Ondo State Government has announced plans to empower 1,200 women as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration, in a move aimed at deepening economic inclusion and social development.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Seun Osamaye, disclosed this during a media parley held at the ministry’s Skill Acquisition Complex in Akure.
She said the figure represents an increase from the 1,000 beneficiaries recorded in 2025, reflecting what she described as the administration’s growing commitment to women empowerment.
According to her, the initiative aligns with the policy thrust of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa under the “O’datiwa Odirorun” agenda, which focuses on economic empowerment and inclusive growth.
Osamaye commended the governor and the First Lady, Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, for supporting programmes targeted at improving the economic wellbeing of women across the state.
She explained that the theme for the 2026 celebration, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of sustained investment in women as a driver of broader societal development.
“This year’s celebration will be impactful, inclusive and action-driven. When we invest in women, the benefits extend to families, communities and the economy,” she said.
The commissioner added that beneficiaries would be drawn from diverse groups to ensure fairness and inclusivity, noting that the selection process would reflect different socio-economic backgrounds.
She further revealed that the event, scheduled for April 21 at the Dome in Akure, would feature the launch of key initiatives designed to support women’s advancement.
Among them is the Ondo State O’datiwa Women Cooperative Multipurpose Society, aimed at enhancing financial inclusion through access to credit, business support and wealth creation opportunities.
Also planned is the Ondo State Female Iconic Awards, which will recognise five women for their contributions to development in the state.
In addition, a panel session themed “Breaking the Ceiling: Women as Pillars of Ondo State Development” will bring together stakeholders to discuss strategies for increasing female participation in governance and economic activities.
Osamaye stressed that International Women’s Day should go beyond symbolic celebrations, describing it as a platform to drive concrete actions towards gender equality.
Stakeholders, including women groups, ministry directors and senior officials, were present at the briefing, underscoring the collaborative approach to the initiative.
Observers say such programmes could play a significant role in boosting women’s economic participation and strengthening inclusive growth across the state.
