ACCESS HOLDINGS AND CORONATION GROUP CHAMPION LANDMARK NIGERIAN ART EXHIBITION AT TATE MODERN

Access Holdings Plc and Coronation Group Ltd, led by Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede CFR, have announced their joint support for Nigerian Modernism, the first major UK exhibition dedicated to charting the evolution of modern art in Nigeria.

Opening this October at London’s Tate Modern, the exhibition will showcase over 250 works by more than 50 Nigerian artists, tracing a creative journey from the 1940s through the turn of the century. This historic presentation places Nigeria’s artistic legacy firmly on the global stage, offering overdue recognition to the country’s modernist pioneers.

For Access Holdings and Coronation Group, the partnership goes beyond sponsorship. It is a strategic investment in cultural identity, restoration, and pride. Both institutions believe that Africa’s progress will be powered not only by innovation in boardrooms and markets, but also by imagination expressed in studios, classrooms, and museums.

“As a people, we have always drawn strength from creativity. The Nigerian modernist movement tells a story of resilience, dignity, and cultural awakening in the face of change,” said Mr. Aig-Imoukhuede, who is also a Member of Tate Modern’s International Council.

He emphasized that through this initiative, the two financial institutions are helping to democratize access to African art, ensuring it is seen, studied, and celebrated globally.

“This is about inspiring a new generation—not just of artists, but of Africans who know that our stories matter. Our cultural legacy is a living testament to our ingenuity and contribution to the modern world,” he added.

Karin Hindsbo, Director of Tate Modern, described the exhibition as “a powerful celebration of the artists who shaped African Modernism,” noting that it will spark global conversations around cultural innovation and exchange.

Calling Nigerians at home and across the diaspora to embrace Nigerian Modernism as both a cultural homecoming and a reassertion of identity, Mr. Aig-Imoukhuede concluded: “The power of art transcends borders. This exhibition reminds us to reconnect with our roots and invites the world to see us through our own lens—rich, diverse, and unapologetically African.”
