The Babcock University community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of one of its students, Olaoluwa Subomi Lawson, a 200-level undergraduate, who allegedly took his own life at his father’s residence in Redemption Camp City, Ogun State.
The heartbreaking incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, and has since drawn widespread grief and concern from students, staff, and the broader public.
According to early findings, news of the young man's death was relayed by his mother, Mrs. Olufunke Lawson, who resides in the United Kingdom. She informed relatives in Lagos after being alerted to the incident. A family member residing in Festac Town subsequently reported the matter to the Ogun State Police Command.
Security sources confirm that the deceased was found hanged in his room at the family home, a discovery that has left many stunned. It remains unclear what led Olaoluwa to take the extreme step, as no suicide note has been found. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Olaoluwa, described by peers as quiet, intelligent, and respectful, was enrolled in a degree programme at the private Christian university located in Ilishan-Remo, also in Ogun State. His sudden demise has sparked serious discussions on student mental health, especially as academic pressures and personal struggles continue to take a toll on young Nigerians.
Attempts to reach Babcock University’s spokesperson for an official statement were unsuccessful as of press time, but sources say the institution's counselling unit has been alerted to provide psychological support to students affected by the news.
The Ogun State Police Command has since confirmed that the case is under active investigation, promising to release more details once facts are established.
This incident adds to the growing list of student suicides in Nigerian tertiary institutions, prompting renewed calls for stronger emotional and psychological support systems within campuses.
As the Lawson family mourns their loss, friends and fellow students have taken to social media to pay tribute and share memories of Olaoluwa, while urging others to seek help and speak up in times of mental distress.
