FG OUTLINES STATE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR FORMER PRESIDENT BUHARI


The Federal Government today announced comprehensive burial arrangements for former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, confirmed deceased in London on July 13. Addressing the press at the National Council Chambers, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, provided detailed insights into the national programme of events.

An Inter-Ministerial Burial Committee, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, has been inaugurated. The committee, which will coordinate all aspects of the state funeral alongside the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family, comprises: Ministers of Finance; Budget & Economic Planning; Defence; Information & National Orientation; Works; Interior; FCT; Housing & Urban Development; Health & Social Welfare; Art, Culture & Creative Economy.

National Security Adviser; Special Adviser to the President on Policy & Coordination; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political & Other Matters; Inspector General of Police; Director-General DSS; Chief of Defence Staff

The Secretariat for these arrangements will be managed by the Permanent Secretary's office in the General Services Office.

Key Dates & Events:

  • Public Holiday: Tuesday, 15 July 2025
  • National Mourning: Seven days from Sunday, 13 July; flags at half-mast nationwide
  • Repatriation: Vice President Kashim Shettima leads federal delegation in London for return logistics; remains expected in Katsina by noon on Tuesday
  • State Arrival Ceremony: Brief military reception at Katsina Airport; deceased to be received by President Tinubu
  • Jana’iza & Burial: To take place in Daura, at the late president’s residence, following Islamic rites
  • FEC Postponement: Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council session rescheduled to Friday, 18 July 2025
  • FEC Participation: Twenty-five council members dispatched to Katsina to join burial rites and prayers. 

While condolence registers opened at Federal MDAs, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, and Nigerian missions abroad. And 
International Condolences are being received by President Tinubu on behalf of the nation

Minister Idris urged all Nigerians to unite in prayer for Buhari’s soul and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the Katsina people.
