BREAKING NEWS: AWUJALE OF IJEBULAND, OBA SIKIRU ADETONA, PASS ON AT 91

Nigeria has lost one of its most revered traditional rulers, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who passed away earlier today at the age of 91.

His death was confirmed on Sunday morning by palace officials and later by the Ogun State Government, marking the end of a remarkable era in Yoruba traditional leadership. Oba Adetona reigned for 64 years, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in modern Nigerian history.

The Awujale reportedly died at a private hospital after a brief illness. Sources close to the palace said traditional rites have commenced in Ijebu-Ode, the seat of the Ijebu kingdom, in preparation for official mourning and burial plans.

Born in 1934, Oba Adetona was known for his modern vision and firm stance on justice, culture, and integrity. He played a pivotal role not only in the cultural life of the Ijebu people but also in national matters, often offering candid advice to political leaders across administrations.

His reign saw the transformation of Ijebuland into an economically vibrant and culturally preserved domain. He was instrumental in the establishment of many educational and infrastructural projects and was a strong advocate for the autonomy and rights of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance system.

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described Oba Adetona’s death as “a monumental loss not only to Ijebuland and Ogun State but to the entire Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.”

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, the governor announced that flags would fly at half-mast in all public institutions in Ogun for seven days as a mark of respect.
