The ancient city of Ibadan is in mourning following the passing of one of its illustrious sons, Alhaji Chief Lamidi Adebisi Kosemani Ajadi, a respected industrialist, philanthropist, and socialite. Fondly known as “Alapa Fuja” or “Alapa Faari”, Alhaji Ajadi died earlier today after a brief illness. He was aged 89.
Born on April 5, 1936, to Alhaji Lawal Akanni Akintola of Ogunyinka Compound, Oke-Odo, Ibadan, and Alhaja Salamotu Lawal Akintola of Oga Compound (now Onikete Compound), Ile-Tuntun, Oke-Eleta, Ibadan, the late Ajadi was a true Ibadanman who rose to prominence through hard work and visionary entrepreneurship.
He founded Lamidi Ajadi & Sons Nigeria Limited (LASL, Tyre House) in 1952, a pioneering business that became a major force in the Nigerian automotive components market. The company carved a niche in the distribution of tyres (OTR), earthmovers for caterpillars, dumpers, tractors, and machinery, as well as batteries and tubes—making it a reference point for quality and reliability.
In his prime, Alhaji Ajadi was not just a business magnate but also one of the most stylish and charismatic men in Ibadan. His elegance and sense of culture made him a darling of the city’s high society. He was a close friend and supporter of the late Fuji music legend, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, who often praised him in his songs and public appearances.
Alhaji Ajadi’s life was marked by generosity, hospitality, and a deep commitment to community development. He was well loved by many who benefitted from his mentorship, charitable works, and unwavering dedication to the progress of Ibadanland.
He is survived by a loving family, who described him as a pillar of strength, discipline, and inspiration.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes have been pouring in from family, friends, business associates, and admirers, all celebrating the memory of a man who lived well, built a business legacy, and left an indelible mark on the city he loved dearly.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
May the soul of Alhaji Lamidi Adebisi Kosemani Ajadi rest in perfect peace.
