As part of his administration’s ongoing transformation of the health sector in Anambra State, Governor Charles Soludo is constructing a state-of-the-art trauma centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka. The facility, the first of its kind owned by a state government in the Southeast, is set to significantly enhance care for trauma patients across the region.
The trauma centre, now nearing completion, is expected to improve emergency healthcare delivery for accident victims and other trauma-related cases, especially given the strategic location of the hospital.
In a related development, Governor Soludo recently restored electricity to the Uli campus of the institution after 21 years of blackout. In addition, the campus now enjoys access to the internet and public Wi-Fi, a move aimed at improving students’ connectivity and digital learning opportunities.
According to the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the governor’s infrastructural drive in the healthcare sector has seen the upgrade of several primary healthcare centres and the construction of five new general hospitals. These facilities are being equipped with modern medical infrastructure and staffed with skilled professionals to ensure efficient, affordable, and quality healthcare services.
To further strengthen healthcare delivery, the Soludo administration has employed over 1,000 health workers, including doctors, nurses, consultants, pharmacists, and medical laboratory technicians. The state has also introduced telemedicine as part of its drive to adopt technology-driven solutions in the health sector.
Governor Soludo’s pragmatic and impactful approach to healthcare has earned him national recognition. He was recently awarded the title of Best Performing Governor in Primary Healthcare Delivery—both in the Southeast and across Nigeria. The awards were jointly presented by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Health, and UNICEF.
In recognition of these achievements, Anambra State received a total of $1.2 million—$500,000 for its performance in the Southeast and $700,000 for overall excellence in the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge.
